Can You Take Beta-Carotene and Lutein Together?

Dose or timing may matter

The short answer

High-dose beta-carotene reduces lutein bioavailability by competing for the same carotenoid transport proteins (SR-BI) and incorporation into chylomicrons, diminishing lutein's protective effects on macular health.

How to arrange timing

Avoid high-dose beta-carotene supplements if taking lutein for eye health; food-source beta-carotene is generally fine.

Important context

Whether supplements suit you together also depends on dose, product formulation, health conditions, and medication use. Ask a doctor or pharmacist first if you take medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a chronic condition.
