Can You Take Alpha-Lipoic Acid and Iron Together?

Dose or timing may matter

The short answer

Alpha-lipoic acid chelates iron due to its dithiol structure, forming ALA-iron complexes. This may reduce iron bioavailability for hemoglobin synthesis and iron-dependent enzymes, particularly in iron-deficient individuals.

How to arrange timing

If iron-deficient, separate alpha-lipoic acid and iron supplements by at least 2-3 hours.

Important context

Whether supplements suit you together also depends on dose, product formulation, health conditions, and medication use. Ask a doctor or pharmacist first if you take medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a chronic condition.
