Can You Take Iron and Prenatal Vitamin Together?

May affect absorption

The short answer

Prenatal vitamins typically contain 27-30 mg iron. Additional iron supplementation may cause excessive intake, increased GI side effects (constipation, nausea), and compete with other mineral absorption from the prenatal formula.

How to arrange timing

Check iron content in your prenatal vitamin before adding separate iron. Only supplement additional iron if directed by a healthcare provider based on blood tests.

Important context

Whether supplements suit you together also depends on dose, product formulation, health conditions, and medication use. Ask a doctor or pharmacist first if you take medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a chronic condition.
