Do Dairy Foods Interfere With Iron?
You do not need to avoid dairy altogether; pay attention to calcium when taking separate iron.
The short answer
Some single-meal studies found that calcium can reduce iron absorption, but longer studies of everyday diets have found mixed results.
Why it happens
Calcium, the rest of the meal, and the type and dose of iron can all affect how much iron the body absorbs. A result from one meal may not predict the long-term effect of an everyday diet.
What to do
If you take a separate iron supplement for deficiency, do not take it with a calcium supplement, and follow your product or clinician's instructions. You do not need to remove ordinary dairy foods from your diet altogether.
When this advice applies
There is no single timing interval that applies to everyone. The iron product instructions, total calcium intake, and your reason for taking iron all matter.
